In this project the concept of the micro resp. milli-structured fixed bed reactor  for strongly exothermal reactions is examined based on the technologically important partial oxydation of n-butane to maleic anhydride. In the experimental part at the Institute of Chemical Process Engineering (ICVT)  systematic measurements of reactions kinetics, selectivity, yield and  pressure losses are performed. In the theoretical part of the project, at the department of fluid mechanics scale resolving computations of diffusion, convection and reactions with the lattice-Boltzmann method are performed in order to deduce correlations for the hydrodynamics depending on the details of the pore structure. The figure shows a detail of the flow through the reaction channel of the reactor.
