Purpose of the project is the numerical calculation of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) flows with free surfaces. The background is the analysis and optimization of novel manufacturing processes for sheet steel, the strip casting process. This requires a system for uniform task of the melt on a rotating belt. Here comes the interaction between the liquid melt and an external alternating electromagnetic field is of particular importance, is to be ensured with the help of a uniform thickness over the entire width of the tape. From the perspective of modeling and simulation, it is me this is a classic multi-field problem, since in addition to the hydrodynamic model equations, ie the Navier-Stokes equations, the coupled Maxwell's equations must be solved. Then there is the consideration of moving phase boundaries and complex material behavior of the melt. The aim of the project is the development of numerical methods for such multi-field problems. These models should be studied in a model configuration. The configuration consists of a channel flow with free boundary, as the free surface and thus the film thickness of the channel flow depend on the imposed magnetic field. The project is funded by the BMBF and is part of the "Computational Materials Science" Simulation of the Scientific Center of the TU Clausthal.
